St. Matthew, Chapter 24, verse: 15; The Abomination of Desolation.

 Our paragraph topic is:  (The destruction of Jerusalem) Part 1.  

He wept for the city he cared for deeply.  He wanted to protect it as a mother wants to protect her children and provide for them.  But Jerusalem would not have it.  Jerusalem was a city of its own.  It had come to power and fame to be known throughout the region for its glory.  And that image made it believe that it did not need help from the maker and provider who gave it the ground it was built upon.  How arrogant it had become in its years of progress, fame, and glory to think that it did not need its founding father. 

Christ came to the city with his disciples.  He saw their pride and their joy in being a part of the peoples that had built such a magnificent place.  He saw also the future of the city and what lay ahead, the destruction and desolation that was coming as a result of the pride and the arrogance of the city.  It became necessary for him to let his disciples know what was coming so that they would be prepared.  He told them:  "Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place -let him who reads understand. "  

He wanted them to understand the need to survive the destruction that was coming.  When the temple was desecrated by the placement of idols, it was time for the disciples to leave.  It would be time for the church to move to a new location, to take as many worshippers with them.  To stay would have meant death and destruction.  

What does this mean for followers of Christ today, for those who read?  What knowledge can we obtain from these words to help us prepare for the future that may come?  Will we have a desecration of our places of worship?  Will our churches and altars be replaced with idols of false images to worship as though they are gods?  Will we be forced to acknowledge a worldly power as our god or suffer death and destruction?  Is this a warning for us too? 

Today we live in a different world than what it was two thousand years ago.  We have modern conveniences that were not available then.  Our lives are less cumbersome, we live longer, we are healthier, have more freedom, life all around is better.  Death is not so imminent as it was then.  Christ came to open the doors of heaven to all mankind past, present, and future so that all would have the opportunity for eternal life.  And yet it is this opportunity for eternal life that we loose sight of ,today, in comparison to what modern life has to offer.  

We live as though we are given tomorrow.  And yet tomorrow is not given to us.  Death could come at an instant when we are not prepared for it.  We pray: Father, let the end not come when we are not prepared.  Have mercy on our souls.

St. Matthew, Chapter 22, verse: 15; The trap.

Christ is the Son of the Living God who came down from heaven to walk among the people.  He came to teach and to preach and to give an example of how to live according to the commandments of God.  He demonstrated his love and his passion for the people, his mercy and his willingness to forgive the sins of those who sought forgiveness.

But then there were those who were against him, those who sought to tear him down, to destroy him in the eyes of the people.  They wanted to show him as being a fraud and not the genuine article as the real Son of the Father.  They were the ones who were afraid, who feared that he would show the people who they really were.  They were afraid of being fake and not real on the inside as they appeared to be.  Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might trap him in his talk.  

They took counsel among themselves and came up with a scheme as to how they thought that they might catch him in a trap.  They believed that they could trick him.  They believed that they could trap him.  They believed that they could plan a way to bring about his fall, but they did not think that they were dealing with the Son of God who knew their plans before they did.  He saw through them.  He understood them.  He knew where they came from because he knew the influence from which they came.

They could not trap him.  They could not trick him.  They could not harm him in any way.  He came that he might surrender himself for the sins of mankind.  God wanted all men and women, boys and girls to be free of sin, so he gave Adam the choice to decide to obey his commandments.  But Adam was human and Adam came up against the serpent who tricked Eve and brought sin into the world for all mankind.  

Now we each and everyone of us have to make that decision and live by it for the rest of our days.  For Christ came and gave us a new choice, a new life, a new beginning.  He came and freely gave of himself to be our sacrifice, our propitiation, that we may have life and have it more abundantly.  The choice is now ours, individually to make.  The choice is now ours to individually to decide.  The choice is now ours to individually live day in and day out that we may know the truth of who we are in Christ.  He gave us life and it is life that is within us if we choose it.

St. Matthew, Chapter 21, verse:15; Praise and Indignance.

Our paragraph topic is:  (Anger of the Jewish leaders) Part 2. 

He cleansed the temple of the money changers and the buying and selling.  He brought prayer and worship back to the temple.  Christ taught the poor and downtrodden in the temple and he cured all that were brought to him.  He was kind.  He was compassionate.  He was loving to all.  He was the Messiah.

He knew what his actions would bring.  He knew that the scribes and the chief priest would not like that he was swaying the people.  He knew that they would fear that someone else was taking control of the people away from them.  Yet his actions brought praise even down to the children.  But the chief priests and the Scribes, seeing the wonderful deeds that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David," were indignant. 

He came into Jerusalem with praise from the people that caused an uproar to all who did not know him.  He went to the temple and caused an uproar with the money changers and the buying and selling in that place of worship.  He taught the people of a new way, a way of faith, a way of peace, a way of love.  He taught them of the Father and the Father's love for all.  For he came to bring about a change.  He came to renew.  He came that all would know the truth of who he was and that the Father in heaven would forgive all of sin.  He came, to be the perfect sacrifice.

We live today with the knowledge and the words that he left for us.  We live today in the belief that there is more to this life than just what we have today.  We live in this world today with the hope that if we follow his life we will be saved for all eternity.  We live today because he gave to us a church, a temple, a place to worship, a place to belong, a membership in his body in the family of God. 

We are blessed, those who know the truth of who we are in the spirit.  Those of this world do not have the same truths.  Their truth is death.  Christ came and gave us a new life.  He came and gave us a new beginning.  He came and paid for our sins that we would no longer live under the cloud of death.  We are new beings in him.  We are spiritual in him.  We are eternal in him.  We are loved and protected in him.  The world does not know.  The world does not believe.  The world wants to take away that knowledge and change us into the living dead.  The world hates those who know and believe because the world is indignant.

Praise be to the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end.  Amen.
