St. Matthew, Chapter 22, verse: 21a; Caesar.

They had crafted their question with precision so that every word would weigh upon a given response.  Was it lawful to give tribute to Caesar?  Christ was not concerned with local politics.  He was not steeped in regional or national politics.  His was the concern of his father, the kingdom of heaven.  His concern was the politics of the universe and the whole human race not that of the local, regional, or national leader.  Yet the Herodians sought to test him with this question on tribute.

He knew not Caesar.  He knew not the local coinage.  He only knew that which his Father had given him to know and see and do.  He had a mission and a purpose given him by his heavenly father and there were those who sought to impede his progress.  There were those who sought to trap him.  But they were not successful.  He knew about their scheme, their plan and he went along with what they were doing.  So he asked them for the coin of tribute and he asked who's image and inscription it was upon the coin.  They said to him, "Caesar's." 

They were in his world and he was in theirs.  They did not know him but he knew them from eternity.  He saw them but they did not see nor hear him.  They were blind, deaf, and dumb to the word.  So he played their game, answered their questions, and gave them what they thought that they wanted to hear.  His was the universe, theirs was the grain of sand on the earth.  His was the augh and majesty of the Father, theirs was the pain and death of the flesh.  They knew not nor sought not.

Who do we know today?  Do we know our Father?  Do we know Christ the redeemer?  Do we know the life he has given us?  Do we know the light of life that is within each of us?  Can we get in touch with the living energy that is ours for eternity?  Or are we only here for today and gone tomorrow to the darkness?  What do we see when we close our eyes?  Is it darkness or is it the light of life?

Christ is with us if we only seek to find him.  He will come if we call him.  He will provide if we ask for his help.  He will protect us if we know him and believe in him.  He is the living Son of the Father.  He is the Son of Man.  He is the Son of God our Father, the creator of the universe.  And he is the origin of the love that we seek to fill our needs.  For nothing on this earth can satisfy the need that is within us except that which comes from God.  He awaits your call.  He will rejoice at your voice.  He will reward you with riches if you only believe in him and seek his wisdom and knowledge.  God loves.  God is!

St. Matthew, Chapter 22, verse: 20; The Image and Inscription.

They tried all kinds of tricks and traps.  When they did not work they retreated to their dungeons, consulted with each other to come up with other tricks.  Time and time again they continued to seek ways to bring about his downfall and they failed each time.  It was not his time.  It was not his way.  It was not what was written of him that they would bring about his demise.

He would surrender of his own will.  He would lay down his own life because he could.  He would become the sacrificial lamb for all.  So they came and asked him the question as to who to give tribute.  Then Jesus said to them, "Whose are this image and the inscription?" 

They wanted to know what he thought, what he would say.  Would he say that one should give tribute to Caesar and not to God?  Or would he say give tribute to God and not to Caesar?  What would he say that would contradict what he taught and believed?  What would he say that they could use to trap him?  They waited with expectation on his response knowing that either way that he responded he would provide the answer that they wanted to hear.

Teenagers grow up knowing little of the world they live in.  They have great expectations of what the world has to offer but little true knowledge of what really awaits them.  They live in a closed environment at home with their parents and in schools with their friends and associates where they are protected by their teachers and the school system.  

Then comes the time when they go off to college or enter into the world on their own.  In this world there is even less protection and they must rely upon what was given them at home and at school as guidance.  And this is not enough to steer a good course.  It takes a strong environment and a strong family support system to guide one along the path of life.  And without that support one can surely go astray.  

Christ was tested again and again by those that sought to destroy him.  The children of God will be tested again and again in their journey through life.  Pray that they have a strong foundation from their home and their school and their church that keeps them on the path to God.

St. Matthew, Chapter 22, verse: 19; The Coin.

Christ knew nothing of money.  He had none.  His kingdom was not of this world.  His father provided all his needs and he lacked for nothing.  His lodging was provided for.  His food was given to him through his disciples.  He had clothing.  He had friends and followers who cared for his every need.  So he had no need for the trappings of the average person who sought to have wealth and money and valuables. 

But the Herodians sought to bring this concern to him so that they might have his thoughts on the earthly desires of who mankind should serve.  They asked Christ should man give tribute to Caesar.  Christ in turn asked:  "Show me the coin of the tribute." So they offered him a denarius.  

They offered him a coin with the face of Caesar so they could determine if he would say give tribute to Caesar.  By saying such he would be telling the people to not give tribute to their God as they were given to do for centuries.  For it was their duty as Jews to give tithes to the temple to support the synagogues throughout the years as members of the Jewish faith.  Yet here they were, the Herodians, seeking to get Christ so say otherwise.  But he knew of their trickery.  He knew of their wickedness and he saw through their schemes to trap him.  

They did not know who was before them.  They believed that Christ was an ordinary man, that he was a fake, a fraud, seeking to mislead the people.  The Torah had foretold of the coming of the Messiah.  It spoke of what he would do when he came.  Yet they did not believe or understand that he was the one who had come.  Others were able to see.  Others were able to hear the words that filled their hearts.  Others were able to believe within themselves that he was the One and their hearts were filled with the joy of a lifetime.  Yet there were those who could only believe that he was a fake or a fraud, that he sought to mislead, sought to take away their power and cause trouble for them.

Blessed were they who knew.  Blessed were they who were able to walk in the light.  Blessed were they who were able to hear the words that filled their hearts with joy.  Blessed were they who had such an opportunity in their lifetime to believe in what their hearts told them was the truth.  And blessed will you be when your eyes are opened and your ears hear and you are healed and walk in the light of the Lord.  No longer will you walk in darkness.  No longer will you stumble and fall.  No longer will you loose your way because he will be with you at all times.  He will light your way and guide you along the path of your journey.  Come!  Step out of the darkness into the light.  Become the child of God that you are.  He awaits you.  Christ awaits you.  The angels rejoice at your rebirth.

St. Matthew, Chapter 22, verse: 18; The Hypocrites.

Our paragraph topic is:  (Tribute to Caesar) Part 6.  

They sought to test him.  They sought to trap him.  They sought to know what were his thoughts on the matter of Caesar, the ruler of the Roman empire.  They thought that they were clever and wise and cunning.  But they were only revealing the wickedness of their thoughts and inner beliefs according to the directions that they were given by those who wanted to stop Christ.

So they sent the best of the best of their scholars and wise men to meet with Christ in an attempt to trap him in his own words that they could testify against him as witnesses.  But Christ knew of their plans.  But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?"  

Here they were pretenders, paid actors pretending to be pious, holy, seeking knowledge, truth, and wisdom only they were wolves in sheep's clothing seeking their own purpose to get paid and to serve their masters who sent them to trick and trap Christ in his words.  They were wicked men.  They were deceitful and dishonest men.  They were high in stature but low in character, wearing an outward mask but having a mask underneath showing their true nature.

They did not fool Christ for he was able to see beyond the mask to the inner self of who they were.  He knew them for their nature and their character.  He saw the influence behind the inner mask, the evil that drove them to do what they were called to do.  And he was able to call them out as hypocrites.

Often times we are drawn to the charismatic ones who lead a group.  They are the ones that we wish that we were like, the ones that we want to be with.  Yet because of our desire to belong we find ourselves bound to a group that does not have the same values, but we go along just out of a need or a coercion to belong.  Gangs provide that need to belong and then they brainwash to solidify any second thoughts of backing out.  All this comes from a need to build up strong support for an ability to withstand the temptation of the gang.  It takes a strong individual along with a strong support group to prevent the draw of gang coercion.

Christ came to bring peace and love to the people of the earth.  He was an example to those who knew him, those who walked with him.  The gangs of his time sought to recruit him because they wanted to use him as their symbol to cause the people to rise up against Roman rule.  But his kingdom was not of this world.  So they tortured him, beat him, spat upon him and crucified him upon a cross of wood even though he was innocent of any crime or sin.  He was the sacrificial lamb that came down from heaven to be a propitiation for the sins of all mankind that we may have life again.  We lost it once but he came and regained it for all eternity.  So our gang is the gang of Christ.  We are the children of God our Father who has given us life eternal because we follow the rules of his commandments and belong to his gang.  Our home is not of this earth but of the kingdom of heaven.  Come!  Join the brotherhood of Christ and become a member of the Christian gang.
